Short Biography

Craig Barley joined Butterfield’s trust team in The Bahamas in March 2018. He has over 30 years’ experience in both legal and financial services. Craig was most recently Chief Executive Officer of Latour Capital DO Brasil, spearheading the Group’s investment strategies and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the company. Prior to joining Latour, he spent ten years with Merrill Lynch. An attorney, Craig began his career in Brazil at the law offices of Messrs. Arnoldo Wald, and subsequently held positions with Banco Omega (subsequently Warburg Dillon Read do Brasil after the merger of Swiss Bank Corporation and UBS) and Director of the Wealth Planning division for UBS Private Banking. Craig was a Founding Partner and Managing Director of Asset Finanças, Serviços e Participaçōes Ltda., a family office and consultancy firm focused on the Brazilian market. He has extensive knowledge of the Latin American business and investment landscape.

What is your favorite restaurant to take a client or colleague to?

Island Brothers in The Bahamas and ale Petit Beefbar in Chelsea or JncQuoi in Lisbon.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

The reason why we have two ears and one mouth is that we should listen more than we speak.

What was your first job?

Quick stint at Berlitz school of languages, followed by an apprenticeship as an intellectual property agent.

What is the book you recommend to everyone?

The Prince by Maquiavel.

What changes do you expect to see in your practice over the next year?

Exponential growth with the increase of the client base arising from the recent acquisition of Credit Suisse fiduciary assets.
