What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

Adjusting to the different challenges that COVID-19 has presented. Our business traditionally thrives off face-to-face contact with clients, so to be able to adapt to a new model and actually increase client interaction has been fantastic. I don’t see client travel disappearing entirely, however it is clear that remote, digital meetings will comprise a larger part of what we do going forward, and that resonates with the next generation of our clients in terms of mitigating our carbon footprint.

How did you get into private client?

I began my career as a Management Trainee with a local bank here in Bermuda, which gave me the opportunity to experience various aspects of finance. Trusts intrigued me, given the strong legal aspect required and I haven’t looked back since. That was 26 years ago.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Be engaged and listen. Be responsive, but with your own conviction. A client may not always like what you have to say, but they should respect it (especially if you are proven correct).

What is your favourite quote?

Out of adversity comes opportunity.

Do you have any outside interests or hobbies?

I find myself talking to lawyers a lot… I like golf too.

When the restaurants reopen, where would you like to go?

My wife and I have our local here in Bermuda (Blu restaurant) which thankfully we are able to visit since the original lockdown period ended. Once we are able to travel again we will most likely visit one of our favourite restaurants in Edinburgh―Castle Terrace.

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

Being part of the team expanding Butterfield’s business in Asia and seeing the opportunities take shape.

How did you get into private client?

I have been in the finance sector my whole career, a lot of it in investment banking.  I have been involved with trusts for many years, but became more interested in it when I saw the potential of Butterfield’s model in the sector.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Think laterally; imagine what the industry will look like in five years’ time and design your career accordingly.

What is your favourite quote?

“Life is not a rehearsal.”

Do you have any outside interests or hobbies?

I have pre-teen kids – hobbies are a luxury!  As for outside interests, I do spend a lot of time in the sustainability and ESG space.

When the restaurants reopen, where would you like to go?

In Singapore, the restaurants have been open since June 2020.  They are so busy it is hard to get a booking.  I am looking forward to getting back to Ku De Ta in Bali!

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

The team has worked incredibly hard to be creative this past year in assisting clients who have been negatively impacted by COVID. For instance, we have been able to completely reengineer operating businesses in trusts, which were relying on international clients and travel, such as hotels. By marketing to the wealthy local inhabitants of countries hit by international travel losses, we have managed to remain profitable and most importantly, keep our clients satisfied.

How did you get into private client?

By accident! After studying mathematics at UCL, I wanted to do an MBA. But with little business experience, I was encouraged to apply to Barclays’ graduate management development programme in London. I did four seats, one of which was in private banking where I was introduced to the Head of Trust and then went on to work for him. After this, I became professionally qualified in 2002 and decided to return to Switzerland. I have been working with Jim Parker ever since.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Technicians need to be absolutely perfect in terms of their knowledge. However, trustees often forget the human element and how to communicate with clients. My advice is to concentrate on both: being both technically sound and interpersonal.

What is your favourite quote?

“It is not abundance, but excellence that is wealth,” Joseph Joubert.

Do you have any outside interests or hobbies?

I am a professional diving instructor, a fireman and a parent to four children who traumatise me into doing all sorts of things.

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

The opportunity of looking under the bonnet and restructuring and reviewing existing trusts for many clients and entities due to the vulnerabilities that COVID brought about.

How did you get into private client?

My legal background. I was involved in a brokerage desk for institutional foreign investors and the bank was sold to UBS. After this, I went into fixed income, which had little activity. I therefore went to private banking and met with UHNW clients, which is where I became a trust specialist.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Listen to your clients and try to understand what they are trying to achieve.

What is your favourite quote?

“Champagne, champagne. In victory you deserve it and in defeat you need it.” Winston Churchill.

Do you have any outside interests or hobbies?

Playing tennis, sailing and visiting my children in Portugal!

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

Apart from keeping busy, staying sane and alive? During the lockdown working with my colleagues in Guernsey and Geneva to broaden our firm’s message and together we made some really engaging content. Cometh the hour and all that…

How did you get into private client?

I love music and sport, especially motorsport, but was not good enough to make a living at either so… I dealt a lot with private aircraft early in my career which gave me a bit of a USP.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

You don’t have to be brilliant just be thoughtful.

You are not your clients and it’s about them not you.
