Q&A

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

Working closely with the regulator in Singapore to develop a new company structure in Singapore called a Variable Capital Company – with it we are now competitors to Cayman and Luxembourg for instance, and we can enable families to bring wealth to Singapore in line with economic substance.

How did you get into private client?

It was by accident. I was the most junior partner in a firm and the senior partner gave me a portfolio of clients they were disinterested in – they were very old trust deeds. In 2004, Singapore updated the trust law and this file became the most active. I was previously a tax lawyer so it became natural for me to stay there.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Take a long term view in everything you do.

What is your favourite quote?

“Those who hear not the music think the dancers mad." Friedrich Nietzsche.

Do you have any outside interests or hobbies?

Fashion and assembling looks! I am trying to learn how to play the piano.

When the restaurants reopen, where would you like to go?

Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck – a hole in the wall in the Far East Plaza.

I used to be based in Indonesia, which is where I started my career on the back of the Asian financial crisis. I initially worked for companies in tax and trust and then they asked us to deal with private clients.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

You are in a privileged role of advising some of the most successful families and individuals in the world. So respect that privilege by staying on top of your game and be so good, they can't ignore you.

"The great trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist." Roger 'Verbal' Kint.

Q&A

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

We have seen a huge spike in services for family offices. Singapore has a very enticing tax exemption for family offices. It has been around for a few years, but it has quadrupled between 2016 – 2020.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Be passionate about your work and enjoy the journey of guiding your clients through the intricate web of succession planning.

What is your favourite quote?

“Never go into business purely to get money. If that’s the motive, you’re better off doing nothing." Richard Branson.

Q&A

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

Completing our Singapore office and launching our Hong Kong office. Both offices have allowed us to offer "in person" US tax advice to clients in the north Asia and South Asia markets. The most interesting legal project I have completed this year is completing pre-IPO restructuring for a large PRC-based family with US connections.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Listen to your clients, and try to find answers to the questions they are actually asking – not just the questions you think they should be asking. Our clients in this practice area have generally experienced great financial success through hard work.

What is your favourite quote?

“There is no limit to what you can achieve if you don't care who gets the credit." Ronald Reagan.
