Q&A

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

The highlight of my practice in the last 12 months was closing a four jurisdiction asset division between two siblings who had been at odds for over 6 years following their parent's death. The deal took more than 14 months to broker and the closing was completely remote with simultaneous transfers, notarial actions, and company buy-backs occurring in France, Egypt, and Switzerland, with the client in Costa Rica. There was a mix of real estate, jewelry, private companies, and cash totaling over $20 million in value. It was very rewarding to be able to get our client the freedom and piece of mind she had been looking for after so many years.

How did you get into private client?

My summer job after my first year of law school was with a boutique trusts & estates law firm in Austin, Texas that had a surprisingly international clientele of US and foreign clients, and I have been assisting international private clients in connection with their US and cross-border tax, succession, and business planning ever since.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Be flexible in work and interested in clients, as the type of work you are called upon to do in the private client world can shift dramatically from one client to the next or from year-to-year. If the practitioner remains interested in the issues of his or her clients and how to help them navigate the changing legal and tax world, then the practitioner will be well on his or her way.

What is your favourite quote?

"All poets write bad poetry. Bad poets publish them, good poets burn them,” Umberto Eco.

Do you have any outside interests or hobbies?

As a parent of an almost 2-year old, my hobby time has vastly decreased; however, I still try to play ultimate frisbee once a week or so, which has been my main hobby/outside interest since 2001 having competed with the Swiss national team in 2015 (European championships) and 2016 (World championships).

When the restaurants reopen, where would you like to go?

Café des Négociants.
