Q&A

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

Trust issues and the litigation arising from a Middle Eastern criminal investigation involving various the Caribbean, Middle East, and European jurisdictions.

How did you get into private client?

Initially, I was interested in wills and estates work. I was a summer associate at a law firm in Vancouver with an incredible private client practice (Donovan Waters QC had been there for years). I articled and was an associate at a firm in Vancouver with an incredible litigation practice where I was involved in some interesting and high profile Chancery work. From there I moved to Toronto where I was involved in some very high profile litigation originating from some Swiss trusts. From Toronto, I moved to Cayman to head up the commercial estates and trust litigation department of a small law firm which is now Bedell Cristin. I moved to England in 2010 and have been based here specialising in trust controversies ever since.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Work with as many different kinds of people as you can and learn as much as you can from each of them. Eventually you will sort out what will (and will not) work for you.

What is your favourite quote?

“The heart has its reason that reason knows not of” - Pascal

Do you have any outside interests or hobbies?

My family! I love history, walking my dog, reading, travelling, hiking and ice skating.

When the restaurants reopen, where would you like to go?

The Bull & Butcher in Turville (think Vicar of Dibley) – kid and dog friendly with lovely walks nearby.

Q&A

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

First, to be able to mentor so many junior lawyers and to see their practices grow. Second, working on a large number of multinational transactions. With the recent Covid pandemic, we embarked on a number of restructuring transactions. My high net worth clients are concerned about what the future holds for families with wealth and they are looking to rearrange their affairs to provide more flexibility for the future.

How did you get into private client?

When I started in 1989, I worked for two senior lawyers – one who focused on public company work and the other on private client work. I found I enjoyed the work more in dealing with the private clients. The firm asked me to move to Toronto in 1994 and I decided to pursue the private client practice at that time. I was later seconded to the government for 2 years as a policy advisor, where I met a lot of influential people and made a number of contacts within the government.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

It is important to get involved in the community – you must write, attend conferences and be active in the various associations.

What is your favourite quote?

“Continuous effort – not strength or intelligence – is the key to unlocking our potential." Winston Churchill.

Do you have any outside interests or hobbies?

I enjoy hiking – West Highland Way, Coast To Coast, the Adirondacks, the Himalayas – biking and being the outdoors generally.

When the restaurants reopen, where would you like to go?

Scaramouche, Toronto.

Q&A

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

BLG was retained on behalf of a Trust relating to an alleged fraudulent transfer of funds by institutional trustees operating in Liechtenstein and Switzerland. The funds had been transferred to Canada ostensibly for an investment transaction being undertaken by an unrelated Trust. We are providing advice and input, along with the family’s lawyers in other jurisdictions, on approaches and proceedings. The issues are novel and the parties are scattered across a number of countries. The nature and extent of professionalism, expertise and collegiality brought to bear as regards the development of strategy and decision-making has been very satisfying.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

In knowing your own capabilities and experience, do not be reluctant to occasionally step out of your comfort zone and build on those by pursuing a new cause of action or tackling a different sort of issue.

What is your favourite quote?

“It’s not about standing still and becoming safe. If anybody wants to keep creating they have to be about change,” Miles Davis.
