What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

Over the past twelve months, we have provided well-integrated solutions in business, taxation, inheritance and philanthropy to dozens of ultra-high net worth families and individuals in China. We have dealt with many complicated cases which have involved client assets located across various jurisdictions, including mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Cayman Islands. Our clients and their family members in these cases are tax residents of many different jurisdictions. Because of the multijurisdictional concerns of our clients, we have further broadened our connections with legal and tax advisers in these other jurisdictions in the past twelve months. I believe this has been instrumental for us in becoming a one-stop provider for our clients of clear, cogent, actionable legal advice. In terms of dispute resolution, we have represented clients on all sides of family law-related matters, including divorce proceedings for the founders of listed or pre-IPO companies.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Build up your knowledge base. Never miss an opportunity to gain knowledge, whether it is about your practice or your clients and their needs and concerns. All of that knowledge is critical in providing high-quality, comprehensive legal services, be it wealth and inheritance planning, tax identity planning, dispute prevention, dispute resolution or other areas of private client practice.
Global vision. In addition to providing expert Chinese legal advice, it is also important to “think globally” and to consider clients’ needs from a multijurisdictional perspective. Clients need legal advice that allow them to make decisions that reflect their best interests, not only from a Chinese law perspective, but across jurisdictions.
