What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

In addition to many successful assignments this past year advising private clients on their strategic business and personal wealth strategies, including heads of CAC 40 companies as well as up and coming entrepreneurs, in recognition of our firm’s achievements, Opleo Avocats was endorsed with the “mention spéciale” for the best firm in Personal Wealth Taxation at the awards ceremony held for the Sommet Patrimoine & Performance in June 2019.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

The private client legal market is evolving and is not limited to historically wealthy individuals and families, but now includes a new generation of business leaders, particularly those who have built their wealth in technology and innovative sectors. It will be important for private client legal advisers to adapt to this new generation whose personal wealth strategies are intertwined with their business and corporate governance decision-making.

What is your favourite quote?

“Beyond decision-making, creativity needs to be cultivated by gathering and developing one’s curiosity while still maintaining technical know-how, and never ceasing to experiment.” Cédric Villani.

If you were not a lawyer what would your career be?

A sculptor

What is your favourite restaurant in the world and what dish would you recommend?

I don't have one favorite restaurant, but I spend a lot of time in Italy and always enjoy a good vitello tonnato.

What do you do to relax?

I like to read and on the weekends, I go to the country when I can.

Who is the most inspiring person you have ever met or worked with?

I couldn't name one person, but was very inspired by certain individuals who initially trained me at Arthur Andersen.

Outside of legal, what is your surprise expert subject?

Contemporary design furniture.

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

In a 7-year legal battle in California, successfully defending the individual trustee chosen by the deceased settlor against multiple malpractice claims over a period of years, and through a successful appeal overturning an erroneous trustee removal with the court upholding the pro-settlor legal principle that a settlor-selected trustee cannot be removed by beneficiaries based on their hostility to the trustee who, inter alia, enforced the settlor’s distribution requirements and limitations against the beneficiaries.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Seek out mentors in and outside the trusts and estates field, gain experience in complimentary areas of the law, understand your client’s business and personal goals, and provide practical advice that solves problems and doesn’t just identify them – thereby becoming a trusted advisor to your client.

If you were not a lawyer what would your career be?

Writer on food, drink, and travel.

What is your favourite restaurant in the world and what dish would you recommend?

Steirereck in Vienna. The seasonal menu - and recently the Schwarzauer Mountain Trout.
Rick Bayless restaurants in Chicago.
Local seafood restaurants from Honolulu to Vancouver to Hong Kong and Singapore.

What do you do to relax?

Relaxing by a beach or on a boat, enjoying the sun and fresh seafood - with a cool drink in hand. If it rains, classics and history novels are waiting in the wings. Wine tastings, especially Swiss, Austrian, and German reds. All with friends and family.

Who is the most inspiring person you have ever met or worked with?

In law, I had the good fortune to start my international tax and trusts practice at Squire Patton Boggs (then Squire Sanders) and worked with Terry Perris, at the time the firm’s Head of Tax and a former US Supreme Court law clerk. His intellect and passion for learning inspired my life-time practice goals, which were also influenced during my associate years working under Bob Denvir, the Head of Tax at Winston & Strawn, and Tom Fitzgerald, current Chairman of the firm, excellent lawyers and trusted advisors to their clients.

Outside of legal, what is your surprise expert subject?

Though not a native German speaker (or even a student of German), I have learned the songs from Karneval in Cologne/ Köln and sing them in the "Kölsch" dialect, including the song for the local Bundesliga team, FC Köln, earning a chapter in the club’s fan book.

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

The section 47 trust application in Bermuda. It started with a kernel of an idea at a trusts conference in 2015 and after 2 years careful thought, it was approved by the Chief Justice. The clients were delighted.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Empathise with the clients and the situations they find themselves facing. It is not just a commercial dispute, it may be a battle with a parent, a sibling or a cousin, which imbues the situation with an added dimension of personal dislocation.

What is your favourite quote?

“Seize the day.”

If you were not a lawyer what would your career be?

Secondary school teacher – I love the challenge of encouraging people with inquiring minds to develop and grow in confidence. I am a governor of a state school in Barnet and get some opportunities vicariously to experience this in action.

What is your favourite restaurant in the world and what dish would you recommend?

Le Merais, New York – steak and chips!

What do you do to relax?

Who is the most inspiring person you have ever met or worked with?

Al Gore – we were speakers at a private wealth conference in Hong Kong. He spoke about climate change – he held the room for 40 minutes and was utterly enthralling – the eye for detail to bring his subject to life and the passion were, genuinely, inspiring.

Raising children, negligently.

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

Settling a long-running case for a key client after many months of protracted and difficult negotiations. And being one of the organisers of the highly successful Fresh Perspectives conference in Barcelona last May.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Always remember that even the most entangled trust disputes can be resolved with persistence and, at times, a good dose of empathy.

Travel writer.

My husband, who has recently given up a career in the City and is retraining to be a primary school teacher.

Connect with your clients in order to truly understand what drives them and what their needs and worries are, but always stay true to yourself. Work hard but have some fun along the way.
