What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

My practice focused on tax planning, advisory and tax strategy, both national and internationally (application of tax treaties), including private clients, estate planning for individuals and its families, as well as the tax aspects of transactions carried out by corporations, mergers, acquisitions and reorganizations, transfer pricing matters, among others. I was representing clients including 500 Fortune multinational companies before tax authorities in rulings requests, audits, tax refunds claims and settlement procedures. Representative clients include families on the top Forbes Mexico list and many other high and ultrahigh net worth families.
The past 12 months have been very active in private wealth industry in Mexico, due to the election in July 1st, 2018 of a left wing president from a newly formed political party that took office on December 1st, 2018. The economic, political and administrative changes that the new administration is implementing, including a new social driven economic model rather than a neoliberalist model, is leading wealthy families to create, review or adjust their estate planning structures in order to face the new political challenges. The domestic estate planning industry is defied by requirements from clients to create new forms of vehicles and strategies to protect their investments against potential political and economic instability, using innovative vehicles such as domestic PPLI’s, the use of Bilateral Investment Protection Treaties (known as “BIT or APRIS”), change of tax residence and other solutions.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

With more than 20 years in tax and private clients, advising individuals and families in organizing its estate and wealth, structuring wealth matters, repatriation of funds, asset protection, corporate governance, among other services, I strongly believe that the private client lawyer formation involves a deep study of different areas of law, such as tax, trusts, succession, corporate, finance & banking, but more importantly, to develop “soft-skills” related to families, such as discretion, conciliation, capacity to read people’s personality, good social behaviour, sympathy, prudence and developing of good connections, among others. Private Clients world is thrilling and exciting but also requires a high degree of commitment to the client in order to become a reliable family advisor.
