What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

Looking at the protector role, with a number of families. Being based out of the UK, I am acting in a protector role for a number of clients with offshore structures. My role with clients with non-UK trusts and assets has slightly changed because of my residency. I am therefore able to, as a resident of Malta, act as a protector for those structures. This has been interesting and moving forward I will likely do more of this, as there is a lack of professional protector services out there. I have stepped into more of the strategic consultant role in the UK and protector role for non-UK structures.

How did you get into private client?

I was a stockbroker. I went through the ’87 crash and recession and got made redundant from a small private client brokerage firm, owned by a large bank. At this point, I thought it was time to find something new! I was looking for a role that would look after the same type of clients (complex assets and needs), but from a different angle- a personal angle, recession proof. Hence becoming a private client lawyer.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Find a niche. It is important to have an area which really interests you and where you can develop a unique selling point. Just being a good private client adviser is not enough. You need to have a passion and excel at that.

What is your favourite quote?

"Action without vision is only passing time, vision without action is merely day dreaming, but vision with action can change the world." Nelson Mandela.

Do you have any outside interests or hobbies?

Here in Malta, I have a small holding – 6 to 7 acres of olive trees. I am registered in Malta as a part time farmer with an olive farm! We are developing this and hopefully will include an organic olive press.
