What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

We recently had an amazing outcome for a European couple who started a business many years ago and received poor advice when forming their business. In trying to exit that business, we were able to restructure how the company was constituted with the IRS’s blessing in advance. We saved them $75m- $100m in income tax. Two large law firms prior to coming to us told them that their case was impossible!

How did you get into private client?

When I was in college, I decided I did not want to be an accountant. I went to law school knowing that I wanted to specialise in tax. I then did a Masters in tax law. I wanted to deal with people’s personal wealth versus corporate. When I first started, I was 1 of 5 people under 40 doing significant international private client work in the mid 1990s – I got rather lucky getting the job! I had an opportunity with the laws just being enacted and took advantage of this.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

It is vital to use every opportunity to gain knowledge and continue to develop areas of expertise. Being a successful private client attorney takes hard work, dedication, patience, and being a good listener.

What is your favourite quote?

"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do." Steve Jobs.

Do you have any outside interests or hobbies?

Spending time with my family and my two teenage daughters. I enjoy boating and fishing, college football and I love to travel.

When the restaurants reopen, where would you like to go?
