What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

The team has had the busiest year that I can remember. Managing that during a period when, for much of the time, we have had to operate remotely has been a real challenge (not unique to us of course), but the team has risen to it admirably. Achieving what we have achieved over the last 12 months in those circumstances in my view outshines any particular individual highlight that I might claim personally. I am extremely proud of the whole team!

How did you get into private client?

I moved to Jersey! Having decided in 2004 to move to Cayman for a change of scene after a number of years practising in the City (London), Hurricane Ivan hit very shortly afterwards. That then took me to Jersey – and as a result of that, I ended up doing a lot of trust and private client litigation, which then developed also into some advisory work in the area (although always with a contentious focus).

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Understand your clients and what is important to them, including personally and emotionally. On the contentious side, be aware that litigation in trusts and private wealth matters can involve considerations and issues that often don't feature at all in commercial litigation.

What is your favourite quote?

"Without music, life would be a mistake." Friedrich Nietzsche.

Do you have any outside interests or hobbies?

I’m a keen gym goer. I also like to surf, play football and box when I can. My other love is music (guitar and bass), occasionally performing in our office band!

When the restaurants reopen, where would you like to go?

We have been lucky enough in Jersey to be able to continue to go to many restaurants, but obviously my trips to London have been severely curtailed. When I can get back there again, I would love to visit an old favourite: Club Gascon in West Smithfield. The paired tasting menu is amazing!
