What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

On behalf of a beneficiary client, I appealed the decision of the Deputy Bailiff in Guernsey successfully and secured a ringing endorsement of her appeal (and criticism of the trustees for failing to appeal) (In the matter of R and RA Trusts (Court of Appeal) [Guernsey Judgment 25/2014]). This was followed last year by a successful defence of an application in relation to Without Prejudice documents (In the Matter of the R Trusts [Guernsey Judgement 43/2017).

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

I am a private client litigator. It is easy to over identify with one’s client’s case and to lose objectivity, both in relation to the merits and the underlying evidence. Always retain a degree of scepticism about both.

What is your favourite quote?

“There is no fortress a good Bolshevik cannot storm,” Joseph Stalin.
