What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

Can't choose between two – the first, was arguing for the winning side (fingers crossed) in a technical argument in relation the existence or otherwise of a rule preventing recovery for reflective loss and its application in Guernsey to claims against trustees – this has never been argued before the Guernsey courts and could have impact throughout the offshore world. The second was a technical trust application before the BVI court all done by zoom in early lockdown with a rather interesting view of the presiding judge's nostrils thanks to a rather unflattering placement of his webcam!

How did you get into private client?

When I first moved offshore in 1996, this was my first exposure to international private client work, having done an element of it whilst working at the Bar in England.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Always keep a commercial weather eye out for what is going on worldwide rather than taking a blinkered approach to what’s just happening at home (and always buy your round!)

What is your favourite quote?

“There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch,” Robert Heinlein.

Do you have any outside interests or hobbies?

When the restaurants reopen, where would you like to go?

They are back in Guernsey…… It is an equal tie – the first would be China Red, in Guernsey. The second would be the Lonestar bar, in Cayman – a wonderfully quick chicken quesadilla!
