What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

I became a partner as of January 2020. This is extremely rewarding for me since I started with the firm in 2013, shortly after it launched, and have contributed to its growth and the position it has forged for itself in the French market.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

I believe that new lawyers in this field should realise that the private client world is evolving and now extends to a broader clientele that includes new business leaders and entrepreneurs. It is important today for legal advisors to take a cross-disciplinary approach to fully grasp the interrelated business aspects and personal wealth strategies of this new generation of private clients in order to effectively meet all their needs.

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

Being in the honoured position of becoming a truly trusted adviser to a family with UK, Israeli, French and US connections. It is work that I love for a family that treats me as one of them. This year alone, I have been invited to a bar mitzvah, a wedding and a funeral. Being in this position has helped me to move beyond advising only on specific tax or succession problems, and instead help them with the bigger picture.

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

Finding solutions for clients with complex matters has been a pleasure and fulfilling. Where lawyers from various departments from across the firm put their heads together and work as a team. Being involved in a project like this gives the greatest satisfaction as it shows that together we can navigate the client through cross discipline and cross border matters to find the best possible solution for them.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Constantly try to expand your area of expertise. Your clients will come to you with real life questions, which are complex and complicated (as life is) and quite often not limited to personal tax or succession only. Be prepared to identify red flags from neighbouring areas of law (corporate tax, family, immigration etc.) and involve other experts, in order to avoid solutions which are technically correct but have the potential to create problems for the client when other aspects of their position have not been taken into consideration.

What is your favourite quote?

Brought up with Russian literature, a quote from the world famous Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, comes to mind. With his tribute to things which really matter: “There is no greatness where there is no simplicity, goodness and truth.” Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace.

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

Helping a family and their trustees to negotiate the hazardous path through a potentially contentious probate (a) without ending up in Court and (b) leaving all parties genuinely satisfied with the outcome. This included the settlement of two 1975 Act Claims, a disputed business protection trust, considerable tax efficiencies and the sale of a majority stake in substantial trading business. The work involved the coordination of teams within CRS (including Tax, Trusts and Succession, Estate Disputes, Private Property, Corporate (M&A) and Corporate Tax) as well as other advisers.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Put your client and their best interests at the centre of everything that you do.

I have the honour and the privilege of working with a number of extremely fascinating clients from all over the world on their estate planning and personal affairs. My highlight in every 12 months is continuing to learn from the human nature of others particularly when mediating inter-generational succession planning discussions. I am also a tax geek and love the ever-continuing challenges of the ever-changing tax legislation relating to trusts and to non-UK domiciled individuals. Keeps me on my toes.
