Q&A

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

The intellectual challenge in case after case that requires working across disciplines and specialties to apply complex facts (modern, international, multi-generation families and diverse assets, including trading businesses and new technologies such as crypto-currency) to complex law (trusts and succession law, CRS, beneficial ownership amongst myriad others) in order to provide clear, practical advice that clients' value.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Most of our clients are either sophisticated individuals or experienced professionals and so we should work hard to understand what they are looking for from us and focus our advice on providing direct, practical solutions to specific questions - they do not need us to demonstrate that we know everything about everything and they do not want lengthy complex advice on irrelevant matters.

What is your favourite quote?

“The more I practice, the luckier I get,” Gary Player.

QnA

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

We represented a private client in relation to issues arising from his investment in a household name supercar brand. The matter was satisfactorily resolved at an early stage but being able to work on a highly complex matter involving a number of jurisdictions and dealing with an industry about which I am passionate was extremely rewarding.

How did you get into private client?

I've always enjoyed helping clients work through and resolve complicated legal issues. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to work on major private client matters ever since my training contract. Developing and nurturing that aspect of my practice ever since has been highly enjoyable.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Every day is a school day in our profession - never stop learning and seeking to improve yourself.

What is your favourite quote?

“If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds-worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And, which is more, you’ll be a Man, my son!” Rudyard Kipling.

Do you have any outside interests or hobbies?

As a Francophile, I enjoy exploring different parts of France whenever possible whilst striving to improve my somewhat-rusty French. I also greatly enjoy learning about classic cars, motor sport and wine.

When the restaurants reopen, where would you like to go?

Ocean Restaurant at the Atlantic Hotel is very difficult to beat. Whilst slightly further away, I also love spending time at 67 Pall Mall in London which has fabulous food and an unbeatable wine selection.

Q&A

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

Working as supervising partner and court advocate for beneficiaries of several Jersey trusts, with assets exceeding €1bn, in connection with the contentious restructuring of those trusts. Due to the confidential nature of the proceedings, the various judgments on the case are currently embargoed.

How did you get into private client?

Working in the litigation practices of two of the leading offshore law firms in the Cayman Islands (Maples) and Jersey (Mourant Ozannes) resulted in me gradually undertaking more and more high profile private client work.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Have patience, be yourself, work hard, collaborate with an open mind, and don’t be afraid to take some risks!

What is your favourite quote?

“Continuous effort - not strength or intelligence - is the key to unlocking our potential,” Winston Churchill.

Do you have any outside interests or hobbies?

I play tennis and golf regularly and I play flamenco guitar (badly). I also have a keen interest in British history.

When the restaurants reopen, where would you like to go?

Green Island, Jersey.

Avoid becoming too narrowly focused on one area; tax is not the only or main thing we should be focusing on.

Q&A

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

Being promoted to Legal Director and being welcomed into the senior leadership team at Mishcon.

How did you get into private client?

My second seat of my training contract was private client and instantly found the area of law and its clients to be fascinating. I never looked back and committed to qualifying as a private tax and wealth planning solicitor.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

Private client is an intellectually rigorous area of law. Clients are more likely to trust and be persuaded by people whom they regard as authoritative experts. You cannot afford to scrimp on the black letter. Study, attend courses, read all of the relevant technical books, write articles, respond to consultations, join industry panels and committees etc.

What is your favourite quote?

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits,” Albert Einstein.

Do you have any outside interests or hobbies?

Sleeping.

Q&A

What has been the highlight of your practice over the past 12 months?

Overseeing the reorganisation and transfer into trust of shares in two companies owning a large commercial property portfolio and a landed estate. The reorganisation should save the family involved several millions of pounds, and serve to provide a practical and efficient structure for transmission of the assets to the second and third generations.

What advice would you give rising stars/new lawyers in the private client world?

As someone once said to me, the secret of success is simple: do a good job and don't be an a***hole.

What is your favourite quote?

“You’re never wrong to do the right thing,” Mark Twain.
